Spring Awakening… local version please?

After listening to the Spring Awakening Abum I downloaded months ago, I realized how wonderful it would be if someone would decide to do a local production of this Broadway musical in Manila.

I’m not talking about Ateneo’s “Middle Finger Po,” ok? That is just a total rip off of the Spring Awakening. I want a real version of Spring Awakening with Spring Awakening songs and not just local plays based on Spring Awakening.

You know, this play has actually been banned in Germany for tapping so many social taboos on being an adolescent in its story. But in 2006, a New York based production company finally gave it a run with an alternative rock musical score by Duncan Sheik. Interesting enough? ๐Ÿ™‚

Spring Awakening is going to be in London, South Korea, Brazil, Sweden and Germany this 2009… So the question is, when will Manila’s turn be? I’m betting it’s not gonna be soon. That’s the problem with third world countries… they’re the last of the options. ๐Ÿ™

To Trumpets, Stages, Repertory Philippines or any local theater group out there… tell me if you guys finally decide to take my idea.

Oh, btw, Hunter, you’re quite spectacular yourself. LoL ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, read more about Spring Awakening through it’s Wikipedia entry.
Listen to my fave Spring Awakening song, My Junk, here.

  1. Uhmmm, actually, Atlantis Productions has already begun auditions for A Philippine Production of Spring Awakening, which will open next year. Great news right? ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. I was actually surprised to hear that there is a Manila production of Spring Awakening, considering its themes of atheism, pre-marital sex, masturbation, teen suicide and abortion among others- which are all taboo topics in Philippine society. Flash back to the backlash when Atlantis first did Rent, the first thought that came to my mind was “CBCP”… I wonder if this has been caught in their radar yet, or if they care at all. I am hoping that our society and powers that be are more open minded now and are more willing to face these issues head on.

Either way, Im happy to hear that Filipino actors would have the chance to perform this amazing show. Ive been a fan since I saw it on Tony Awards and have been blessed to have seen the show both on tour and on Broadway. It would be interesting to see and compare notes, but more importantly to see what new things this production would bring and the performances that come with it.

btw, isnt Ateneo doing (or is it finished already?) a local version of Bare? it has very similar themes to Spring Awakening, with rocking music to boot as well:D
