Product Review: Kuu Konjac Japanese Facial Sponge

If you are still contemplating on whether you should buy a Clarisonic to add to your facial cleansing routine, I have a better alternative for you. Don’t even think about buying those B-grade sonic cleaning tools that are popping here and there. I’ve seen them and I tell you, you’ll just be throwing away Php1,500.00-Php2,000.00 down the drain.

For those who has Clarisonic, you guys know that nothing else in its kind can top off Clarisonic. The USD149.00 tag is well worth the price. But if you think that is too much for a facial tool, let me introduce to you a much better alternative: the Kuu Konjac Sponge.

I first heard of these eco-friendly konjac facial sponge from youtuber Shannon Sullivan. Apparently, for people who are too sensitive for Clarisonic, they are switching to Dr. Sponge konjac sponge (USD8.00-10.00) or this other brand under Boscia, which is available in Sephora at a much higher price.

As a sucker for new beauty finds, this piqued my curiosity in trying out konjac facial sponge. So when I was browsing over at Taste Central for new products to try, I got so excited when I saw these Kuu Konjac Sponge being locally available. I quickly picked up the Deep Cleansing Bamboo Charcoal Kuu Konjac Sponge and the Pore Minimizing Natural French Green Clay Kuu Konjac Sponge.

What is Konjac?
Konjac is a traditional Japanese jelly-like health food, made from calcium hydroxide or oxide calcium a type of potato called “konnyaku potato,” which are grown in Southeast Asia, China, Korea and Japan. In fact, the Japanese have used the Konjac for more than a century, as a beauty treatment for their delicate skins.

97% of Konjac is water and 3% is Glucomannan and is very rich in minerals. It contains water, protein, carbohydrate, lipids, sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, copper, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C, pantothenate, niacin, fatty acids, folic acid and dietary fibre with a total of 16 amino acids.

This Kuu Konjac Sponge gently cleanses and soothes the skin by removing dirt and oil, naturally restoring the pH level of the skin. This beauty sponge helps to stimulate blood flow and encourage new skin cells, revitalising the complexion without damaging the skin. This konjac sponge is highly absorbent in both water and oils and is excellent for thorough cleansing of impurities. The pH level of the sponge is alkaline and has the function to break down dirt and neautralize acidic and oily areas.

Now, to target specific skin problems, the French Green clay has an incredible power of absorption, is rich in minerals and fine essential oils which exfoliates, cleanses, smoothes and softens the skin, restoring vitality and glow whilst drawing oil, grease from the skin. It contains micro-molecules that gently cleanse the pores and effectively removes impurities and toxins and stimulates blood flow.

On the other hand, the Deep Cleansing Bamboo Charcoal Kuu Konjac Sponge is perfect for those with oily skin prone to acne and outbreaks. The Bamboo Charcoal sponge contains activated carbon & various minerals that enhance absorption of excess oil and dirt. Bamboo Charcoal is a natural anti- oxidant that helps fight hard-to-reach, acne causing bacteria. Thus revitalising the complexion and tightening the pores.

Directions For Use:

  1. Rinse before use and then gently massage until the sponge has absorbed the water.
  2. Use the sponge in circular motions, it can be used alone as it is naturally 8.4 pH balanced or with a small amount of cleanser if you wish.
  3. Rinse sponge after use (do not wring) and hang to dry.
  4. The sponge will harden when dry. Re-hydrate in warm water before use again.
  5. If damaged or worn (lasts 2-3 months of normal daily use) please add to your compost.

For those who have sensitive and delicate skin, this Kuu Konjac sponge might be a better choice than Clarisonic. For one, it’s super gentle and is made from 100% natural fiber sponge. It has no chemical, additives, coloring, and preservatives. The Kuu Konjac sponge is naturally pH balanced and is alkaline to help neutralize any acids (oil and dirt) for deep cleansing.

Like Clarisonic, Kuu Konjac Sponge stimulates blood circulation and new cell generation. However, unlike Clarisonic, Kuu Konjac sponge is naturally sustainable and environmentally safe. Since it’s natural, it’s biodegradable. Did you know that you can freely throw this in your compost pit after you have used it in 3-4 months?

So when you do the math: a Clarisonic will cost you USD150.00 plus their USD27.00 disposable brush every three months versus this Php380.00 Kuu Konjac sponge… I think we all know the answer. 😉

For those who love Clarisonic, by all means, I think it’s still one of the best facial tools I have. In fact, I am still using mine. It has not taken the beauty coffin just yet. I use my Kuu Konjac in the morning when my face just needs to get rid of the oils that has accumulated during my sleep and bring out my Clarisonic at night when I have to remove all the makeup debris I have worn during the day.

Again, if you are itching to try out Clarisonic but thinks that the price is just too much, I suggest for you to try out Kuu Konjac Sponge. It’s a good addition to your daily beauty routine. Even my beau is enjoying his Deep Cleansing Charcoal Kuu Konjac Sponge.

Kuu Konjac Sponge is available in three varieties for only Php384.00 over at Taste Central.

It’s actually my first time to read about such product and I am even more interested to try this after reading that it’s natural and has no chemicals and preservatives. I just wish that it’s also available in stores like Watsons, etc. 🙂

I love these things! It feels like I gave myself a little face massage without necessarily upsetting my sensitive skin. It can work with any cleanser too!
