I always have a soft spot for UP Town Center because it’s pet friendly… and same goes to all pet-friendly establishments. Anyway, a couple of nights ago, I was able to try Tokyo Tonteki with my family.
Before digging in to their specialty grilled katsudon, we tried some of their appetizers, starting with the Spring Roll of Proscuitto, Avocado and Onsen Egg as their bestseller.
The prosciutto is a simple spring roll loaded with Japanese mayo and all things fancy. I love how the egg yolk oozes as you slice through the piece and add creaminess in every bite.
Tokyo Tonteki’s Potato Salad is small but definitely filling. One serving is enough to jumpstart your Japanese gsatronomical experience.
Next on their starters is Tokyo Tonteki’s Avocado and Tofu Salad. Now, I’m not really fond of eating tofu so this was a bit so-so for me. But props for the unique dish. π
Now, onto the main menu!
Joining Manila’s Japanese chain party, Tokyo Tonteki prides itself with perfectly prepared premium meat spread like a fan and served on a hot plate. Their katsus are grilled, not deep fried–it’s a different twist to your usual katsudon.
I was so used to dining at Yabu that I was looking for the sauces and rituals done at Yabu. Frankly, it’s a bit strange not to do the grinding ritual (which we have adapted from Yabu). However, it find it refreshing to bite into some tender and juicy grilled meat (versus the normal crunchy deep-fried ones). As usual, all set meals come with unlimited serving of miso soup, rice and cabbage.
Here’s an excerpt of their menu:
For health buff, I guess Tokyo Tonteki is a good alternative since the meat are grilled versus deep fried. But, personally, I’d rather have my usual katsu fix done deep fried. Haha! π
Tokyo Tonteki is operated by Vast Asia Dining Corp. Same group that runs Chiliβs, Super Bowl of China, Yomenya Goemon, Red China by Super Bowl, Nanbantei of Tokyo and La Petit Camille.
