Pick of the Month: Maybelline Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick

Don’t you think they’re just too pretty? I recently got myself two more shades of these beautiful Maybelline Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick after being able to test how good they are on my lips.

I have chronically dry lips, which needs loads of balms before even putting on anything over it. And you know the struggle of balms and matte lipsticks, they never really look good together at the end of the day. I guess I’ve never really found a matte lipstick that would really look good on me at the end of the day.

So no matter how much I wanted to try out matte lipsticks, my lip condition has prevented me from sporting out this trend.

Thank God for Maybelline’s new Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick, a cream-to-matte liquid lipstick that offers intense matte color without drying out your lips. Having said that, I thought of giving it a try.

As you may know, I’ve purchased Mat 2 and Mat 5 last month and instantly loved it. I really wanted to get a red liquid lipstick since reds are harder to pull off–it’s a hit or miss kind of thing and most of my previous reds won’t last that long looking pretty on my lips.

The trick with reds is that you can’t put too much balm since the color will be all over the place after a couple of hours, yet you can’t scrimp of moisture since the dark color can make your lips look dry.

Good thing with Maybelline Velvet Matte Mat9, there aren’t much preps needed before you put on the product. Just a sweep of balm, outline your lips with a liner, then sweep on Maybelline Mat9, that’s it! You don’t even have to use a lipbrush to even out the color. Just the teardrop-shaped applicator is enough to beautifully spread the product on your lips flawlessly. It’s perfect for on the go touch ups, when needed.

Aside from the boost of moisture in Maybelline’s Velvet Mattes, I noticed that it leaves a light tint of color on your lips even after the product has been washed off–to which I prefer since I also have very pale lips and the light tint is definitely a plus for me.

Here are the swatches of the four Velvet Matte shades that I have. I was just about to repurchase a red Velvet Matte but I also picked up Mat 12 as they looked pretty when it was swatched by Liz. True enough, this shade is a nice pinkish-nude tone that brings life to your face, instead of washing you out.

Maybelline Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick is still on sale via Beauty MNL for Php299.00. But a little blue bird also told me that you can get these in beauty stores as part of Maybelline’s current 2 for Php499 promo. ๐Ÿ™‚

We have the same dilemma on lips. I have dry lips and from time to time I apply my lip balm to keep it hydrated. I tried the NYX Matte lipstick before, I forgot the shade that I’ve bought but it has a resemblance to the shade of Mat 2. I like matte lipsticks because they look nice on lips because of its shine-free finish. I liked the shade of Mat 12 because it looks so natural and since I am fair skinned I think it will fit me well and the Mat 9 is very perfect for my mother because she really likes the shades of red because her skin tone is lighter than mine. Since there’s a promo that for Php 499 I can have two Matte liquid lipsticks, Mat 12 for me and Mat 9 for my mother.

Thank you for this review. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, the Mat 12 is gorgeous! I also check the swatches by Liz, the other shades are good but the Mat 12 is really a stand out for me. I also like the packaging of this line.

I love matte lipsticks from the time I have tried using it. ๐Ÿ™‚ I haven’t really liked this velvet matte on my first try. I’ll try this again and see if I would love it the second time around. haha. The finishes are superb but the packaging is a bit deceiving. So talagang dapat iswatch muna. Like yung Mat 12 doesn’t really look like pink from the packaging, it’s more of brownish. The Mat 5 is a bit different din when swatched. ๐Ÿ™‚

So interesting to have a matte lipstick that starts out in gloss-ish form! They’re beautiful colors and packaging! If you’re interested, I just did a review on Loreal’s matte lip pens on my blog at http://wp.me/p65oNU-5y

I haven’t really tried matte lipsticks because I’m afraid it will make my lips dry more. My lips chap within a few hours outside even with lip balms. But I see how a lot of women are raving over matte lipsticks nowadays and how I envy them. I will probably try this brand soon since it’s not too costly for starters and Maybelline lipsticks has good glide on my lips. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have to say, if you are looking for the typical liquid lipstick that is on trend right now, like the Kat Von D ones or the Anastasia ones, or the LA Girl matte pigment ones (for an affordable option), the ones that do not transfer, this Maybelline one is not it. Just to put it out there. I bought this thinking that it was, and wanted to try it because it claimed it is not drying on the lips. And it made good on its claim, it is not drying at all. But for those who like very pigmented liquid lipsticks, this is not for you. You will not get full pigmentation on one swipe. You will have to build it up. I personally do not mind building up the color. My only qualm would have to be the time before it dries, and that it is not transfer proof. But the reds in this line are one of the most beautiful.

Hello Chachi! It took me more than an hour to wait for it to dry totally, and when I swiped my fingers over it and pulled sideways to see if it will smudge, okay naman. No transfer at all. Yun lang, it was 1 frekkin hr.
