Today, as the first Sunday of October, we celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
Before having Pepper, I never really cared for pets the way I do now. Yes, I had dogs, but I was never really hands on with my pets before as I had the luxury of having yayas to take care of them.
As you may have known, Pepper is my first ever cat. The one whom I (and my boyfriend) rescued from EDSA. And, I guess, my first real pet. With Pepper, I remember waking up early in the morning to feed him and make him poop. I remember collecting his baby tooth and keeping them as souvenir. I remember throwing an all-cat party for this first birthday.
Since then, my beau and I both have fallen in love with cats and rescued three more to date: Yoona, Twinkle, and Star.
If you have furbabies like me, I’m sure you have marked your calendars today to bring your pets out and attend their blessing. Pet blessings are normally done during St. Francis’ feast. These events may include a verbal blessing and holy water and are usually held at a place where different animals can gather.
If you are planning to bring your pets to a pet blessing, there’s one in Marikina Riverbanks, one in Eastwood, and another in Tiendesitas. I was lucky to attend this year’s blessing in advance through Showbiz Day Out in Antipolo.
If you are planning to buy a new pet, I suggest for you to visit PAWS, CARA or PART and think about adopting rescued animals. I have had breeded pets and rescued ones, and believe me, they’re all lovable. No one is above the other. Besides, taking home a rescued animal from the shelter gives space for another life to be saved.
If you are not allowed to have pets at home but would like to help out, you may visit Philippine Animal Rescue Team and donate. This way you can still help out our furry and feline friends who are still looking for a furever home.
Do you have rescued pets at home? Do leave me comments and let me know your story or send a tweetpic–I’d love to see your furbabies!
