I believe Hong Kong is one of the best places to shop. It’s close to the Philippines, only about 2 hrs away, and if you’re high in shopping IQ, you can find a lot of good buys when in Hong Kong.
Before I talk about anything else, always remember friends, that you should get a local sim and subscribe to any sensible unlimited 3G/4G plan to keep you connected to the world during your trip abroad.
I got my China Mobile sim from the airport and activated it. It costs HKD80 with 1.5GB internet. I had to refill HKD50 to get another 1.5GB since I can finish that in 2.5-3 days of whole day internet use.
I was so glad there was a newly opened mall (shown on the first picture above) near the place we stayed in New Territories called Yoho Mall. Out first stop was to get some drinks from Habitu Cafe, a more high end coffee shop versus Starbucks. I super love their unique blended drinks and cute cakes 🙂
Speaking of cute cakes, pastries are actually popular in Hong Kong. I remember the first time I went there some 2 decades ago, we were already buying all sorts of cute cakes from Maxim’s. This one’s found in one of the MTR stations:
I didn’t get a chance to visit any night market during our stay this time but our relatives were able to bring us to Stanley Market, which houses a lot of interesting stores like clothes, silk cloths, Chinese stamps, souvenirs, etc.
Just a point of comparison, the Scholl Velvet Smooth Foot Pedi was more expensive in Hong Kong, too, versus in Manila. At HKD359.90, that’s more than Php2000 converted. In here, you can get Scholl Velvet Smooth for only Php1,685.00; even the replaceable buffers are cheaper here. Scholl recently launched the Hello Kitty version in Hong Kong but it’s not yet available in this Watson’s branch in Stanley.
I was so happy to bring home these post cards for HKD10 in packs of 5 pieces.
I also noticed that fresh fruit juices are popular in Hong Kong and are very accessible even at convenience stores. Oh, and they have this Durian flavored drink!
Below are some of the random stuff I bought during my stay in Hong Kong:
If you’re into organic facial sponge, you can definitely hoard some from Hong Kong since they’re a whole lot cheaper versus in Manila. I got these from Bonjour for only HKD 22-29.
Cat toys and accessories are cheaper in Taiwan versus Hong Kong. But I still bought a couple of cat toys and treats for my babies.
And if you’re Chinese, I’m sure you know Lao Hu Ji!
If you didn’t get to visit Disneyland, don’t worry! You can still buy souvenirs from the Disney store in HKIA.
And if you’re using Clarisonic, well, guess what, brush heads are cheaper at HKIA. The Twin sets are only HKD350.
Things not to buy in Hong Kong (because they’re more expensive):
- Scholl Velvet Smooth Foot Pedi
- Cat toys and accessories
- Jo Malone Perfume at HKD 1,167, which is like Php7k+ converted to peso while we have it in Rustan’s for Php6,980! But I bought anyway…
So, dolls, here are some of the shopping items I was able to take a good picture before using them or giving them away. Haha!
