Full Review: Huawei P9 Plus

I’ve had this phone for over a month now and I can’t deny how much I love using my Huawei P9 Plus. So much so that my iPhone has been lounging around somewhere most of the time.

Today let me share with you my review on my new favorite phone, plus photo comparisons to see if the dual-lens Leica cam is worth the hype.

In a nutshell, Huawei P9 Plus is the brand’s current top of the line smartphone boasting a dual lens camera co-engineered with Leica–one shoots in monochrome, the other in RGB. It has a 5.5″ screen with a 1920×1080 at 401ppi resolution, packed with 64GB memory and 4GB RAM.

The sleek Huawei P9 Plus is a dual-sim phone and is a little bigger than an iPhone 6s. It has a dual 12MP rear camera with 4K video, and a laser autofocus 8MP front-facing camera. You can Google the rest of the detailed specs but what I want to focus on this post is the image quality and I’d like to share with you some comparison.

Below shots are displayed raw with absolutely no photo edits or color cures, just added my couchwasabi watermark:

Here’s one of P9 Plus’ features wherein you can clearly show depth of field:

Here’s a shot taken in the same light condition using the Huawei P9 Plus and Samsung Note 5:

You can see that the photo taken by Huawei has more detail and crisp colors versus the one taken with Samsung.

Given the same lighting conditions, Samsung’s photo seems to look a little more washed out compared to Huawei P9 Plus’ image. I guess this is where the Leica-certified dual-lens cameras come into play–the two lenses, when used together, captures better photo detail and lets in extra light.

I used my Huawei P9 Plus as my primary phone when I was in Korea and I love how my night shots turned out:

I mean, I’m sure my iPhone couldn’t take low-light photos as good as these.

Another thing to love about my Huawei P9 Plus is that the battery life is a beast! It lasts an entire day even with my abusive use of Snapchat. My iPhone could only probably stay up to 2 hours if I was having my Snapchat binge!

Aesthetics-wise, I love the muted gold tone of this Haze Gold–it’s the only color available in the Philippine market for Huawei P9 Plus. But I’m sure you can get it in the beautiful Pink Gold in other countries.

Anyway, since my purse is such a jungle, here’s my Huawei P9 Plus after a week’s use… good thing I installed a generic tempered glass protection on its screen. But look at the broken edges. Hehe.

Yup, it has cracks on the edges and across from its right side–I’m such a rough user–but that’s okay. 🙂 It just goes to show that I super love this phone and I’ve used it quite a lot! Haha!

I’m still waiting for the tempered glass specifically for Huawei P9 Plus to be available locally. And I wished Huawei thought of including a tempered glass as its freebie instead of just the hard case.

Speaking of the hard case, since the hard case that came with it leaves the bottom part exposed, my Huawei P9 Plus has gotten some nicks and battle marks even when it sits inside my purse when I’m not holding it (it might note be seen on the photo… but there are a couple of dents and fine lines already). I assume my phone gets bumped with my keys inside my bag or something that’s why it has gotten all the scratches. Nevertheless, the bottom metal part acquires flaws and scratches fairy easily so I highly suggest for you to buy a fully-covered case if you’re OC.

Since it’s a hard plastic case, it has acquired a handful of scratches as well. See those lines running across the fingerscan button? I haven’t dropped my phone, not a single time, but those are some serious battle marks, too!

I super love this phone. It all boils down to the fact that this Huawei P9 Plus is definitely a great mix of fashion and function. Was the Php24,000 (reg price Php30,000) price tag worth it? It’s a definite YES, simply because this one’s cheaper than an iPhone, plus it outperforms my iPhone in terms of battery life and when taking night shots.

Hi, I would like to ask if you’ve found a good screen protector for this and where? I’m looking for something that covers the screen well.
    Thank you
