How to add greens to your cat’s diet

Bet you never knew cats need veggies, too. I never thought of the importance of giving Pepper greens until one day, he ate some raw kangkong from our kitchen and later that night, he threw up.

When I googled about it, I read that cats need greens from time to time so it helps them eliminate furballs naturally. Here’s a quick post on how you can plant your own organic kitty grass for your furbabies.

What you’ll need:A pack of cat grass seeds (Php135.00 for 300g); a plastic pot (Php30.00-Php50.00); and a pack of organic potting soil (Php150.00)

I ordered my seeds and pot from an online seller. For the pot, you may start will a smaller size, but since I’m feeding two cats, I decided to get the medium sized elongated pot. You can buy these from ACE Hardware for only Php30.00. Lastly, the organic potting soil is from Greenhills.

What you have to do:

1. Soak the seeds in clean container for 6 hours. Cover the container and keep it in a dark place. Do not soak longer than 6 hours to prevent seeds from getting molds.
2. After 6 hours, the seeds will begin to sprout. Drain water.
3. Fill a pot with soil, almost to the top. Lightly water. Distribute wet seeds evenly over soil. Cover seeds with 1/4 inch of soil and lightly water again.
4. Cover pot in plastic and keep in a dark place. Check daily and make sure the soil stays moist.
5. Once you see grass growing, remove the plastic and place in a sunny place. Within a week, the grass should be ready for your cat.

Don’t worry, the cat grass is super easy to grow. It has a 90% success rate. Do not worry if your seeds did not sprout overnight or after six hours. Mine didn’t but I placed the moist seeds in the pot after 6 hours and wait for it to grow. By Day3, I already noticed sprouts coming out so I transferred it by the windowsill. Pepper was so excited for it that he had some even just on Day6.
