For newbies, taking up yoga can be a little intimidating, having to choose the right yoga studio or even choosing the right class can take a lot of research and time. Sometimes, people can also use this as an excuse to put off yoga.
In today’s post, I will be sharing with you my 7-day unlimited experience with Yoga Plus and let’s break down all the classes in terms of friendliness level to help you pick your classes with ease.
Flow Yoga or Vinyasa Flow (level of difficulty 3 to 3.5 out of 5) – I think this is the most basic form of yoga wherein movement is accompanied by breathing – one movement is one breath. Flow postures vary from one class to another, and from one teacher to another.
Hot A (90min) or Hot Hour (60min) (level of difficulty 3.5 to 4 out of 5) – If you have taken Bikram before, you should do fine. Basically Hot Yoga is just Flow but practiced in a heated room. You can explore Hot A, B, or C. For first timers, be sure to try a 60-minute session first before diving into a 90-minute session. I took a 90-minute class at first and I felt light-heated after 45 minutes of taking the class. After a couple of days, I wanted to tough it out and tried Hot yoga again under Hot Hour and I enjoyed it the second time around.
Jivamukti (level of difficulty 2 out of 5) – I was highly curious about this class and was really prepared for some action. To my surprise, Jivamukti is all about meditation. So the level of difficulty is very low. Jivamukti is a variation of Hatha yoga, which is a gentler form of Flow. With this, I think Jivamukti is perfect for newbies or those who would like to warm up with yoga.
Power Hour (level of difficulty 3.5 out of 5) – This is basically a Flow class under a 60-minute duration. The level of difficulty would vary from one tutor to another.
Yin (level of difficulty 2 out of 5) – Yin classes focus on meditation and relaxation. It is designed to increase flexibility and openness in the body by working on the tendons, ligaments, cartilage and fascia.
Led Ashtanga (level of difficulty 4 out of 5) – I was told that this was a more intense form of Flow yoga. Honestly, I didn’t even try to take this class. Lol. So if you think you are already comfortable with Flow and would love to explore the next level, you may want to check out Ashtanga classes.
I guess for you to make the most out of your trial class, you should be honest with yourself as to what you can and cannot do. If there’s something uncomfortable, feel free to tell your teacher and he/she will be glad to modify the poses for you.
What I love about Yoga Plus is that I see the instructors very approachable. In some of my classes, I’ve had classmates who’ve had knee and/or back injuries. With this, I’ve seen our teachers guide them during class to make sure they do the yoga poses as safely as possible. I’ve also had a classmate who was 2 months postpartum and our yoga teacher made sure the poses in our class were gentle and safe for her.
I would agree that yoga is for everybody and every body. Depending on your desired level of difficulty, there’s a perfect yoga class waiting for you to enjoy. Through the course of 7 days, I found my home in Flow. But I also welcome challenges from time to time through my hot yoga classes.
